What is African Bloodstone?

• A variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz) characterised by dark green colouring with distinctive red spots
• The red inclusions are caused by iron oxide (hematite) deposits
• Also known as Heliotrope, derived from the Greek words meaning "sun turner"
• Different from Indian Bloodstone, African varieties often display deeper green tones with more pronounced red spotting

• Primary colour: Deep forest green to dark olive green with bright crimson to deep rust-red spots
• Some specimens may include yellow or white inclusions
• Often displays a waxy to dull lustre when polished

Formation Process
