ABALONE SHELL
The Symbol of Water, Calm and Cleansing
✦ SHELL INFORMATION ✦
COMPOSITION: Organic gem material, the shell of a marine snail (genus Haliotis). It is made of Calcium Carbonate (aragonite) layered as nacre (mother-of-pearl), bound by a protein called conchiolin.
MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 3 to 4
TRANSPARENCY: Opaque
COLOURS: Shimmering swirls of blue, green, purple, pink and silver on the inside and outside
LOCATIONS FOUND: Coastal waters in cool and temperate regions around the world, including New Zealand (where it is called paua), Australia, and Japan.
FORMATION: The animal builds its shell by laying down thin layers of aragonite crystals. The layers scatter light, which creates the rainbow shimmer.
★ DID YOU KNOW? ★
- The colours come from structure, not pigment. The microscopic layers of the nacre bend and reflect light, so the shimmer shifts as you tilt the shell.
- The row of small holes along the edge are not decoration. The living animal uses them to breathe and expel waste, and new holes form as it grows.
■ USING ABALONE FOR SMUDGING ■
- Abalone shells are widely used as a bowl for smudging, the practice of burning dried herbs or wood to cleanse a space. This use is rooted in Indigenous traditions, and the shell is often said to represent the element of water alongside the fire and smoke of the herbs.
- Place the burning bundle of sage, or a stick of palo santo, on the shell to catch embers and ash.
- Many people add a layer of sand, dried earth or small stones to the shell first. It protects the shell from heat and helps the herb stay put.
- Let the smoke drift around the room or around yourself, then rest the herb on the shell to put it out.
- Never leave burning herbs unattended, keep the shell on a heat-safe surface, and open a window for ventilation.
