AGATE GEODE

The Stone of Hidden Treasure and Inner Calm

✦ GEMSTONE INFORMATION ✦

COMPOSITION: Silicon Dioxide, a hollow rock nodule lined with banded Chalcedony (agate) and often filled or topped with quartz crystals

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 6.5 to 7

TRANSPARENCY: Agate is translucent to opaque. Inner crystals are transparent to translucent.

LUSTRE: Waxy to vitreous (glassy), with a sparkling crystal lining

COLOURS: Banded shades of white, grey, brown, blue, pink or purple, with clear, white or coloured crystals in the centre. Colour varies widely from piece to piece.

LOCATIONS FOUND: Geodes occur worldwide. Well-known sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Morocco and the USA.

FORMATION: Forms in gas bubbles or cavities in volcanic rock, or in sediments. Silica-rich fluids seep in and deposit thin bands of agate on the walls, then crystals grow inward into the hollow.
