ARIZONA PICTURE SANDSTONE

✦ ROCK INFORMATION ✦

COMPOSITION: Sedimentary rock made mostly of compacted Quartz (Silicon Dioxide) sand grains, with iron oxide staining that creates the patterns

MOHS HARDNESS: Varies with how firmly the grains are cemented. The quartz grains are Mohs 7, but the rock as a whole is often softer.

TRANSPARENCY: Opaque

LUSTRE: Dull to matte, with a soft sheen when polished

COLOURS: Bands, swirls and streaks of red, orange, beige, brown and sometimes purple or dark iron-oxide lines

LOCATIONS FOUND: Arizona and Utah, USA.

FORMATION: Forms when sand from ancient deserts and rivers is buried and cemented into rock. Iron-rich groundwater later seeps through it, leaving stripes and swirls that can look like painted landscapes.

  • The “pictures” are made by iron oxide, the same compound that gives rust and many red rocks their colour. As mineral-rich water moves through the stone, it leaves banded, landscape-like patterns, so no two pieces are alike.
  • Sandstone is made of grains of sand cemented together, and the grains in this rock were laid down long ago in ancient desert and river environments. Your piece is a small slice of that landscape.
