BLACK LIP MOTHER OF PEARL SHELL

The Symbol of Protection and Quiet Strength

✦ SHELL INFORMATION ✦

COMPOSITION: Organic gem material, the nacre (mother-of-pearl) lining of the black-lipped pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera). It is made of Calcium Carbonate (aragonite) plates bound by a protein called conchiolin.

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 3 to 4

TRANSPARENCY: Opaque

LUSTRE: Pearly to iridescent

COLOURS: Silver-grey to deep charcoal and black, with shifting overtones of green, blue, purple or peacock

LOCATIONS FOUND: Warm Indo-Pacific waters, including French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Fiji and northern Australia.

FORMATION: The oyster lays down thin layers of aragonite and protein inside its shell. Dark pigment in the nacre and the way the layers reflect light create the moody, shifting colours.

★ DID YOU KNOW? ★

  • The same oyster produces Tahitian black pearls, which are among the most famous coloured pearls in the world. The shell is often a by-product of pearl farming.
  • The iridescent shimmer is structural. Microscopic stacked layers bend and reflect light, so the colours change as you tilt the shell.
