COMPOSITION: Fossilised coral, typically with the original skeleton replaced or filled by silica (chalcedony/jasper) and calcite.
MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 4 to 6 (varies with the degree of silica replacement)
TRANSPARENCY: Opaque to translucent
LUSTRE: Waxy to matte, taking a soft sheen when polished
COLOURS: Soft periwinkle to grey-blue, with white or cream zones and darker blue-grey centres
LOCATIONS FOUND: Indonesia
FORMATION: Forms when an ancient coral colony is buried in sediment and its skeleton is slowly replaced by mineral-rich waters, preserving the fine structure of the coral

- Each starburst in a polished slice marks where a tiny coral polyp once lived. The fine lines radiating outward are the walls it built around itself.
- Blue coral (Heliopora coerulea) is one of the few reef-building corals with a naturally blue skeleton. Its colour is attributed to iron-bearing compounds in the skeleton.
