The Stone of Clarity and Calm Focus
✦ GEMSTONE INFORMATION ✦
COMPOSITION: Fluorite (Calcium Fluoride) on a base of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide) with fine-grained Chrysocolla (hydrated copper aluminium silicate)
MOHS HARDNESS: Fluorite 4, Quartz 7, Chrysocolla approximately 2 to 4
TRANSPARENCY: Fluorite is translucent to semi-transparent. Quartz is translucent to opaque. Chrysocolla is opaque.
LUSTRE: Fluorite is vitreous (glassy), quartz is vitreous to dull, and chrysocolla is waxy to earthy
COLOURS: Soft lilac to deep purple fluorite, with white to grey quartz and blue-green chrysocolla
LOCATIONS FOUND: Qinglong Mine (Dachang) and Xiaotun, Guizhou Province, China
FORMATION: Forms when fluoride-rich hydrothermal fluids deposit fluorite in rounded, grape-like clusters (botryoidal) over a quartz base. The chrysocolla forms where copper-bearing waters alter nearby rock.
★ DID YOU KNOW? ★
- The word “fluorescence” comes from fluorite, because the mineral was one of the first noticed to glow under ultraviolet light. Its own name comes from the Latin “fluere”, meaning “to flow”, as it was once used to help metals melt and flow in smelting.
- Botryoidal means “like a bunch of grapes”. The rounded, bubbly surface forms when the mineral grows outward in tiny spheres from many points at once.
