LOCATIONS FOUND: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Namibia (Tsumeb), Kazakhstan, Chile, Iran, USA (Arizona).
FORMATION: Forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, where copper-rich waters deposit small, sparkling crystals in cavities and cracks in the host rock
★ DID YOU KNOW? ★
- Dioptase was once mistaken for emerald. Its rich green colour comes from copper rather than the chromium and vanadium that colour emerald, and it is much softer.
- The name comes from the Greek words for “through” and “to see”, because the internal cleavage planes of the crystal can be seen through its transparent body.
