AGATE WITH DRUZY
The Stone of Balance and Sparkle
✦ GEMSTONE INFORMATION ✦
COMPOSITION: Silicon Dioxide, banded Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) lined with a druzy layer of tiny quartz crystals
MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 6.5 to 7
TRANSPARENCY: Agate is translucent to opaque. Druzy crystals are transparent to translucent.
LUSTRE: Waxy to vitreous (glassy), with a sparkling druzy surface
COLOURS: Banded shades of white, grey, brown, blue, pink or purple with glittering druzy. Colour varies widely from piece to piece.
LOCATIONS FOUND: Agate occurs worldwide. Well-known sources include Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Madagascar and India.
FORMATION: Forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich fluids deposit thin bands of chalcedony layer by layer. Later, tiny quartz crystals grow across the inner surface, creating the druzy.
★ DID YOU KNOW? ★
- The name agate is traditionally traced to the ancient Greek name for a river in Sicily, the Achates, where the stone was reportedly first found.
- The bands record the history of the cavity. Each layer represents a pulse of mineral-rich water, and the druzy often forms last, when the cavity has room for crystals to grow.
