GARNET WITH ASTROPHYLLITE

The Stone of Passion and Cosmic Energy

✦ GEMSTONE INFORMATION ✦

COMPOSITION: Garnet (a group of silicate minerals, commonly almandine in red specimens) with Astrophyllite (a potassium iron titanium silicate)

MOHS HARDNESS: Garnet approximately 6.5 to 7.5. Astrophyllite approximately 3 to 4, so the stone is much softer in the astrophyllite areas.

TRANSPARENCY: Garnet is transparent to translucent. Astrophyllite is opaque.

LUSTRE: Garnet is vitreous (glassy). Astrophyllite is pearly to submetallic.

COLOURS: Deep red to red-brown garnet with bronze-gold to coppery astrophyllite blades

LOCATIONS FOUND: Garnet: widespread, including India, Brazil, Madagascar and Australia. Astrophyllite: Russia (Kola Peninsula), Norway, Canada, USA.

FORMATION: Garnet commonly forms when rock is altered by heat and pressure (metamorphism). Astrophyllite forms in alkaline igneous rocks, often in pegmatites, as star-like sprays of thin blades.
