GOLDEN MOTHER OF PEARL SHELL

The Symbol of Abundance and Gentle Radiance

✦ SHELL INFORMATION ✦

COMPOSITION: Organic gem material, the nacre (mother-of-pearl) lining of a pearl oyster shell. It is made of Calcium Carbonate (aragonite) plates bound by a protein called conchiolin. Golden pieces are commonly from the gold-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima).

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 3 to 4

TRANSPARENCY: Opaque to translucent at thin edges

LUSTRE: Pearly to iridescent

COLOURS: Champagne to rich golden-yellow, with soft cream, pink or silver sheen

LOCATIONS FOUND: Pinctada maxima is typically harvested in warm Indo-Pacific waters, including northern Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

FORMATION: The oyster lays down thin layers of aragonite and protein inside its shell. Each layer bends and reflects light, which creates the soft glow.

★ DID YOU KNOW? ★

  • The shimmer is structural, not pigment. Stacked microscopic layers scatter light, so the lustre shifts as you tilt the shell.
  • Pinctada maxima is the largest of the pearl oysters. Its shell was once harvested in huge quantities for buttons, and the town of Broome in Western Australia became a centre of the pearl-shell trade.
