COMPOSITION: Natural volcanic glass, mostly Silicon Dioxide with traces of iron and other minerals

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 5 to 5.5

TRANSPARENCY: Opaque to translucent along thin edges

LUSTRE: Vitreous (glassy)

COLOURS: Alternating bands of grey and black, sometimes with hints of white or brown

LOCATIONS FOUND: Mexico, USA (Oregon, California, Wyoming), Iceland, Italy, Armenia, Turkey, Japan

FORMATION: Forms when silica-rich lava cools too quickly for crystals to grow, with the bands created as the thick lava flowed
