COMPOSITION: Silicon Dioxide, combining Amethyst (macrocrystalline quartz) with Flower Agate (microcrystalline chalcedony)

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 6.5 to 7

TRANSPARENCY: Pink amethyst is transparent to translucent. Flower agate is translucent to opaque.

LUSTRE: Vitreous (glassy) crystals set against waxy to glassy agate

COLOURS: Pale pink to soft lilac crystals with creamy white, peach, pink and grey agate patterns

LOCATIONS FOUND: Pink Amethyst: Argentina (Patagonia), Mexico, Brazil. Flower Agate: Madagascar, Indonesia, India.

FORMATION: Forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich fluids first deposit banded agate on the walls, then grow amethyst crystals inward from it

  • The “flowers” in flower agate are not fossilised blooms. They are rounded bursts of chalcedony that form in the stone, and their bloom-like shapes give the stone its name.
