COMPOSITION: Silicon Dioxide, Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) coloured by iron oxide, topped with a druzy layer of tiny quartz crystals

MOHS HARDNESS: Approximately 6.5 to 7

TRANSPARENCY: Chalcedony is translucent to opaque. Druzy crystals are transparent to translucent.

LUSTRE: Waxy to vitreous (glassy), with a sparkling druzy surface

COLOURS: Brick red to deep red-orange, with glittering white or clear druzy

LOCATIONS FOUND: Often Brazil

FORMATION: Forms in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich fluids first deposit smooth chalcedony and then grow tiny quartz crystals over it. Traces of iron oxide give the red colour.
