★ DID YOU KNOW? ★
- Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum. Only red corundum is called ruby, and every other colour is sapphire. The name comes from the Latin “ruber”, meaning “red”.
- The first working laser, built in 1960, used a synthetic ruby crystal. Chromium in the crystal is what makes ruby glow red under ultraviolet light.
