Shungite is composed primarily of elemental carbon with the remaining material made up of silicates, aluminosilicates, quartz, and small amounts of metal oxides. Shungite formed through the metamorphism of very ancient organic-rich sediments and is commonly dated to around 2 billion years old, making it one of the oldest known carbon-bearing materials on Earth.

Shungite is opaque and relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of about 3.5 to 4. Because of its high carbon content, Shungite is electrically conductive and may leave a black residue when handled or worked.
