COMPOSITION: Silicon Dioxide, Quartz variety. Colour comes from trace elements such as iron, and the purple types are amethyst.

MOHS HARDNESS: 7

TRANSPARENCY: Transparent to translucent

LUSTRE: Vitreous (glassy)

COLOURS: White, pale lilac or deep purple, and sometimes golden-yellow (citrine)

LOCATIONS FOUND: South Africa (Magaliesberg region), Kazakhstan. 

FORMATION: Forms in cavities and veins where silica-rich fluids deposit quartz. A large central crystal grows first, then a later stage of growth covers it with many tiny crystals.

  • Spirit quartz is also called cactus quartz because the small crystals sprouting from the large one look like spines on a cactus. It is also known as fairy quartz.
  • It is a growth habit rather than a separate mineral. The shape comes from conditions during formation, and the same quartz can be amethyst, citrine or clear.
