MOHS HARDNESS: Zoisite approximately 6 to 7, hornblende approximately 5 to 6

TRANSPARENCY: Opaque to translucent

LUSTRE: Vitreous (glassy)

COLOURS: Vivid apple to emerald green with black or dark green patches and streaks

LOCATIONS FOUND: Tanzania, with other occurrences in places such as Kenya and Austria.

FORMATION: Forms deep in the Earth’s crust when ultramafic rocks are altered by heat and pressure (metamorphism). Chromium in the mineral gives the zoisite its rich green colour.

★ DID YOU KNOW? ★

  • The green comes from chromium, the same element that colours emerald. Chromium-bearing zoisite from Longido is known for its unusually vivid green.
  • The Longido deposit in Tanzania was first discovered in 1954. The famous “anyolite” from there takes its name from a Maasai word for “green”.
