Strawberry quartz is a variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) whose colour and texture come from microscopic mineral inclusions trapped inside the crystal as it formed. Quartz itself is colourless and crystallises from silica-rich fluids, usually in hydrothermal or metamorphic environments. As the quartz grows, tiny particles of other minerals become enclosed within it, giving strawberry quartz its characteristic speckled or “seed-like” appearance. Like all quartz, it has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale.

Red strawberry quartz gets its colour from iron-oxide inclusions, most commonly hematite or goethite, which create red, pink, or rose tones depending on their concentration and grain size. These iron minerals are incorporated into the quartz during crystallisation and appear as fine internal dots or dust-like clouds. Green strawberry quartz forms in a similar way, but its colour comes from green silicate minerals such as fuchsite or chlorite trapped within the quartz. These inclusions produce pale to medium green hues, often with a soft, mossy or speckled internal texture. In both cases, the colour is caused by inclusions rather than the quartz itself, and natural material typically shows uneven colour distribution when viewed under magnification.
