Ancient Nautiloid Fossil - Formed when the soft body of the Orthoceras (an extinct squid-like marine creature) decayed, and its shell filled with calcite and sediment, gradually fossilising within marine limestone over millions of years.

Also Known As: Orthoceratite, Orthoceras Fossil, Straight-Shelled Nautiloid

Appearance: Typically black, grey, or brown matrix with contrasting white or light-grey fossilised shell patterns

Composition: Primarily Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) — fossilised remains of an ancient marine cephalopod preserved in limestone.

Hardness: 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale
