Shungite Teardrop Pendant on Cord
Shungite Teardrop Cabochon Pendant on cord - 3cm x 2cm
Shungite is composed primarily of elemental carbon, typically ranging from about 30% to over 95% carbon, with the remaining material made up of silicates, aluminosilicates, quartz, and small amounts of metal oxides. Shungite formed through the metamorphism of very ancient organic-rich sediments and is commonly dated to around 2 billion years old, making it one of the oldest known carbon-bearing materials on Earth.
Physically, Shungite is usually black to dark grey in colour, with a matte to slightly metallic surface depending on carbon content. Higher-carbon (Elite) varieties may show a subtle silvery sheen, while lower-carbon material appears dull and stone-like. It is generally opaque, relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of about 3.5 to 4. Because of its high carbon content, Shungite is electrically conductive and may leave a black residue when handled or worked. Commercially significant deposits are almost entirely confined to the Karelia region of north-western Russia.
